What to Expect and FAQs
-
New patient visits will typically last at least 60 minutes.
During this time we aim to fully explore and understand each patient’s unique background, psychological characteristics, treatment goals, and individual concerns.
Follow-up visits will often last from 30-60 minutes, depending upon the needs and stage of treatment for each patient.
-
Prior to your first appointment, you will be contacted by our office to collect certain key information needed for your visit. We will require all patients to fill out a handful of forms and pre-screening questionnaires to gather information about you and your concerns prior to your first appointment. These should preferably be done through the online portal prior to your appointment day.
It is also very helpful to provide us with as many of your prior treatment records as possible. This may be included but not limited to past physician/psychiatrist notes, personal symptom notes, labs, imaging studies, gene testing, hospital records, medication records, psychological evaluations and testing records, etc.
The more information you can provide us before your visit, including detailed info and descriptions on your intake questionnaires, the more productive your visit will be. This helps Dr. Purvis understand many important aspects of your background, concerns, and goals prior to your appointment, so we can hit the ground running. -

In addition to medication management, psychotherapy is included and built-in to every patient visit. The evidence shows that medication treatment plus psychotherapy works better than either of these on their own. When these are consolidated, they are greater than the sum of their parts.
Dr. Purvis uses his own integrative blend of styles and therapeutic techniques, tailored to the needs and goals of each patient. This may include elements of cognitive behavioral therapy, substance use counseling, dialectical behavioral therapy, motivational therapy, goal setting, insight therapy, future-self authoring, coping skills, relaxation techniques, relationship counseling, lifestyle counseling, and psychoanalytic techniques.
Dr. Purvis may give you tasks and homework between each visit to assist you towards your goals. We also examine and integrate our psychotherapy with elements of sustainable well-being, including exercise and nutrition, spiritual and religious beliefs, relationships, career goals, and family dynamics.

Yes, Dr. Purvis will often recommend laboratory screening for patients at their initial appointment and intermittently thereafter as needed. We will also monitor other key areas of your health at each visit, such as blood pressure and BMI.
Our minds and bodies are inextricably linked, and many psychiatric issues and symptoms can be caused or exacerbated by medical illnesses. These are often subclinical or unknown to the patient, and even sometimes overlooked by their primary care provider. Many of our medication treatments also require laboratory monitoring at regular intervals to enhance safety and minimize possible adverse health effects.
In addition, a full medical review is part of every psychiatric evaluation. This aids us in holistically understanding each person for tailored treatment recommendations and lifestyle interventions.
Dr. Purvis is a medical doctor. He is well trained in all areas of medicine and health. He may start select-patients on some simple non-psychiatric medications, within his scope of competence, on a case-by-case basis. He will also communicate and collaborate with other specialists and primary care providers as needed to provide optimal continuity of care.
-
When Dr. Purvis began Resilient Minds, he quickly came to realize he could not meet the mental health needs of our community alone. For this reason, he hired our Nurse Practitioner Gail Schroeder to act as an extender of his care. Dr. Purvis also loves to teach and share his expert knowledge on psychiatric treatment. He serves as the preceptor for PMHNP student Naomi McGalliard and hopes to soon supervise resident doctors from Piedmont Macon.
Dr. Purvis aims to see all first appointments and first follow-ups himself to design your treatment plan. Subsequent follow ups may be with one of our other providers. Nonetheless, Dr. Purvis will always remain your doctor and stay up to date on your treatment. If at anytime you would rather see Dr. Purvis, we will happily arrange that for you.
“I am not what happened to me, I am what I choose to become.”
— Carl Gustav Jung

Dr. Purvis practices psychiatric medicine up to and beyond psychiatric standard of care practices. This includes, but is not limited to psychiatric medication management. Taking medication is not required to see Dr. Purvis, and may not be the optimal choice for some patients. However, most patients will benefit the most from our integrative approach to psychiatric care, which includes a personally tailored medication regimen, judiciously chosen to each fit patients symptoms, needs, and goals. Each patient is then tracked closely for symptom response, side effects, and overall benefit. Each visit we reevaluate your treatment plan, determining the need for continued medication treatment, dosing adjustments, and optimization of your medication regimen.

Dr. Purvis is licensed with the DEA and does prescribe controlled medications including stimulant medication and benzodiazepines. However, these are powerful medications that carry a risk for dependency and a potential for abuse or diversion. We will only prescribe these medications for their indicated purposes and do so judiciously. At Dr. Purvis’s discretion, we may require some patients to first try other medications or undergo more extensive evaluation and monitoring prior to prescribing controlled medications.
Dr. Purvis is under no obligation to refill or continue controlled medication prescriptions started by other providers. While this may be appropriate in some cases, he may advise some patients change medications or alter their use of these medications. If discontinuation of a controlled medication is recommended, Dr. Purvis may help you taper your use or bridge you to a more sustainable and healthy alternative.
We do not maintain this policy to be mean or prevent patients from receiving the care they need. We understand that when these medications are used correctly, they can be life changing when all else fails. However, Dr. Purvis holds and takes seriously his Hippocratic oath. That is, first, to do no harm.
-

We do not practice or condone judgment, prejudice, or ignorance, and aim to see every patient as they are, in an unfiltered and unbiased way.
We want to minimize the stigma surrounding mental health treatment, and seek to remove all barriers, both real and perceived, hindering those seeking improvement of their lives and wellbeing.
We promise to only treat our patients towards beneficent ends, and always aim first to do no harm.
